PYXIS ROSE
MISSION & HISTORY.
Pyxis Rose was formed by Thelma Maguire and Val Rothen as an agent of advocacy for adolescent mental health through embarking on adventures and overcoming physical challenges. The name derives from the Pyxis constellation, a guide for mariners on vast sea adventures, and a compass rose, used to display orientation of cardinal directions. Pyxis Rose represents a beacon for adolescents navigating their uncharted journey to better mental wellness.
As mothers, Thelma and Val have seen the toll anxiety disorders have had on their children and experienced the effects it has on their families. Val and her family have been through the residential treatment process themselves at Mountain Valley Treatment Center with her son. Personal exposure to this anguish is enough to advocate for this cause, but throughout their lives as health and human service professionals, they’ve witnessed how ordinary these experiences are to children and families everywhere.
Each adventure expedition Pyxis Rose endures represents the battles young people face with their own mental wellness.
Val
Rothen
As a veteran professional in the outdoor industry, Val’s experience in seeking adventure and endurance runs deep. As a mother, Val has seen the toll anxiety disorders have had on families firsthand. Val and her family have endured the process of anxiety treatment for adolescents and seen the incredible outcome a program can have on a child's life.
Thelma

From Switzerland to South America, England and the Maine Coast, Thelma has found adventure and advocacy opportunities all of her life. She’s challenged herself through becoming an AmeriCorps volunteer, getting her Master’s in early childhood education and becoming a mother to two amazing young women.
